Drug Name
Trade Mark Name: Cipro
Generic Name: Ciprofloxacin
Drug Uses
Cipro is an antibiotic applied in treatment of the diseases evoked by the following types of bacteria: E. Coli, Campylobacter Jejuni and Shigella. The diseases caused by the above mentioned bacteria are as follows: infections of the skin, lungs, airways, bones, urinary tract and joints.
How Taken
Cipro may be taken together with food for the sake of reducing adverse side effects. The active components of the drug are partially metabolized by the liver and partially excreted by the kidneys; therefore caution must be taken while using the drug in patients with liver and kidney irregularities. Keep in mind that Cipro is not compatible with Antacids.
Drug Class and Mechanism
The active component of Cipro, Ciprofloxacin, is capable of destroying or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms that cause a vast variety of infections. Ciprofloxacin prevents the bacteria from multiplying and recovering their DNA after destruction caused by the medicine.
Many common infections in humans are caused by single cell organisms, called bacteria. Bacteria can grow and multiply, infecting different parts of the body. Medicines that control and eradicate these bacteria are called antibiotics. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that stops multiplication of bacteria by inhibiting the reproduction and repair of their genetic material (DNA).
